PEC-... Error

We're doing our best to make sure as many people can take part in studies on Prolific as possible while maintaining data quality, security, and the integrity of our platform. As such, you may be facing one of the following issues:

PEC-PV-0001:

You are receiving this error message as our external verification checks are unable to confirm that this phone number is in the same country as the account. This can sometimes occur if the phone number is a VOIP number or other non-standard phone service. You may need to confirm this with the service that provides the number, this isn't something we can do for you. At the moment, however, we cannot use this phone number to verify the account.

PEC-AB-0001:

You may be experiencing problems accessing or receiving studies your internet provider is not on our approved list (i.e. it is not an approved provider). This is not your fault and we are working to improve this and make all safe connections accessible on Prolific. If you would like to get in touch with us we will make note of your ISP to prioritise when we next review our approved list.

For the time being, however, this means you may not be able to take studies from this particular internet connection. You may be able to use another internet connection to participate in studies.

Please note that if your account is not on hold, you should be able to withdraw your earnings.

PEC-AB-0002:

You may be experiencing problems because you are on holiday or in a different country listed than the one listed on your account.

You are not banned from Prolific, however, if you continue to consistently experience these errors, it means you may not be able to take studies from this particular internet connection.

Please note that we have security measures in place so that you will not be able to withdraw your money from a different country.

If you received this error message but it doesn't seem to apply to you, please contact our support team.

PEC-AB-0003:

You may be experiencing problems accessing or receiving studies because you are using a VPN, proxy, or browser extension. These tools are used to anonymise web browsing. Please keep in mind that your workplace, public WiFi, or other connections may use these tools.

If you have received this error message, then an automatic hold has been placed on your account. You are not banned from Prolific, however, you will need to contact our support team to have the hold removed.

Please note that continuing to use a VPN or similar after the hold is removed will cause it to return and may put your account at risk of a permanent ban.

If you received this error message but it doesn't seem to apply to you, please contact our support team.

PEC-AS-0005

You may be experiencing problems as our series of automated checks have been unable to distinguish between human and automated access to the platform. This could be due to using an unsupported browser, needing to clear cache and cookies, or using unsupported plugins/extensions.

Please consult our handy Troubleshooting login issues article for more information and potential solutions.

PEC-SUB-0002

You may be experiencing problems because your IP address has been flagged by our system. We run multiple checks with IPs that include checking if the IP has been reported on other websites. As such, we're afraid that you won't be able to take studies from that IP address going forward.

You may be able to get a new IP address and try again with that, though we can't guarantee that that won't also be flagged. If you're on a mobile device you may be able to get a new IP address by simply restarting the device. These IPs are regularly reviewed so may also be unflagged in time. Otherwise, you may need to reach out to your internet service provider.

Please note that your account has not been placed on hold and you are still able to withdraw your earnings.
